Indonesia Earthquake: On Tuesday, an earthquake of 6.7 magnitude struck Sulawesi island of Indonesia, whose epicenter was about 42 kilometers south-east of Palu at a depth of 10 kilometers. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred in the morning and its epicenter was at 1.073° south latitude and 120.263° east longitude. Till the time of writing the news, there was no immediate information about any casualty or damage.


Additionally, in a separate incident, a massive earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred near Indonesia’s Sumatra island.

This earthquake occurred in the sea near Sumatra. This area is located on the ‘Ring of Fire’ of the Pacific Ocean, where many tectonic plates meet, hence earthquakes occur frequently here. However, there was no immediate news of any casualty or damage from here either.



There was a strong earthquake in the Philippines


Earlier, at least 32 people were killed in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the southern city of General Santos in the Philippines. Buildings collapsed due to the earthquake and a tsunami warning was issued across the area. Indonesia issued a tsunami warning for parts of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, saying waves up to three meters high could be seen in the affected areas.

As the tsunami threat increased, Indonesia’s disaster management agency instructed officials of Manado, Gorontalo and Sangihe islands to systematically begin evacuating people to safe and higher places. The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it recorded tsunami waves of varying heights at six monitoring stations. The agency said that the highest tsunami wave was measured at 1.4 meters.
